The historic holdings, which are particularly important for the history of Mainz, range from a breviary made around 1482 for the then administrator of the Diocese of Mainz, Adalbert of Saxony, to some incunabula and feudal letters from the Archbishops of Mainz from the 17th and 18th centuries.

DFG Project Digitization of Medieval Manuscripts
In a DFG project applied for jointly with the Mainz City Library and the State Library Center, Mainz University Library is currently digitizing more than 450 medieval manuscripts. The aim of the project is the complete digitization of the medieval book holdings of the three Rhenish episcopal cities of Mainz, Speyer and Worms. Thirteen archives, libraries and museums make their manuscripts available to the University Library for this purpose.
As part of the project, the manuscripts from Speyer and Worms, which have so far been largely unexplored, will also be made accessible for the first time.
The digitized manuscripts are made available online on Gutenberg Capture.
